A photograph by an unknown artist of a painting depicting the Delaware River near the Delaware Water Gap. Some people are rowing or sailing on the river. There is a house in the background. This piece was painted by Henry Boese.
The Delaware Water Gap is located on the border of New Jersey and Pennsylvania where the Delaware River cuts through the Appalachian Mountains. The Gap is made up of the southern part of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area that is now used for boating, fishing, hiking, and rock climbing. According to Valley Views of Northeastern Pennsylvania by Gilbert S. McClintock, “Boese was an exhibitor at The National Academy of Design between the years 1844 and 1859. Previously in the collection of Harry Stone, New York City.” Henry Boese was born in New York circa 1824, and was an American artist in the 19th century. He died in New York City in 1897.
