Title:
A photograph of two girls having a picnic over the Delaware Water Gap. There are some more people in the distance as well as buildings. This piece was painted by William McIlvaine.
The Delaware Water Gap is located on the border of New Jersey and Pennsylvania where the Delaware River cuts through the Appalachian Mountains. The Gap is made up of the southern part of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area that is now used for boating, fishing, hiking, and rock climbing.
According to Valley Views of Northeastern Pennsylvania by Gilbert S. McClintock, “In 1857 one William McIlvaine exhibited at The National Academy of Design a painting entitled “The Delaware Water Gap.”
William McIlvaine was born in 1813 and was educated at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1832. He traveled and studied in Europe soon after, later returning to Philadelphia to work at his father’s business and then pursue art professionally in 1845. He died in 1867.
