Delaware Water Gap

Description:

This is a photograph of a print of the Delaware Water Gap. The valley is prominent from this view and a man is in the foreground looking out to the river. This piece was published by Cassell & Co. The Delaware Water Gap is located on the border of New Jersey and Pennsylvania where the Delaware River cuts through the Appalachian Mountains. The Gap is made up of the southern part of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area that is now used for boating, fishing, hiking, and rock climbing. Cassell & Co is a currently operating British book publisher that was founded in 1848 by John Cassell (1817-1865). In the 1890s the firm became an international publishing group company. Cassell & Co was bought by Orion Publishing Group in 1998. John Cassell was the founder of Cassell & Co. He was born on January 23, 1817 and was also an English publisher, painter, writer, and editor. He is best known for his periodicals and educational books. He was an entrepreneur that was also a well-known tea and coffee merchant, and with his production of his eponymous product ‘Cazzoline,’ the origin of the word ‘gasoline’ was coined. He was a devout Christian that campaigned for the reduction of taxes on publishing in Britain and also a social reformer who recognized the importance of education and improving the quality of life for the working class. He died on April 2, 1865.
