Title:

Delaware Water Gap

Description:

This is a photograph by an unknown creator of a wash drawing depicting the Delaware Water Gap. Men are seen canoeing on the river, surrounded by a beautiful, mountainous and lush landscape. The Delaware Water Gap is located on the border of New Jersey and Pennsylvania where the Delaware River cuts through the Appalachian Mountains. The Gap is made up of the southern part of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area that is now used for boating, fishing, hiking, and rock climbing. This piece was illustrated by Augustus Kollner on June 3, 1844. Augustus Kollner was a 19th century artist, etcher, engraver, and lithographer based in Philadelphia. He was born in 1812 in Wurttemberg, Germany where he also began his career. Starting out engraving book illustrations and animal portraits in the 1830s, he later immigrated to the United States. He worked as a lithographer at the Haas firm creating advertisements, bank notes, and cityscape views. In 1840 he settled in Philadelphia and established himself as a portrait painter.
