Title:

Delaware Water Gap

Description:

This is a photograph by an unknown creator of an engraving of the Delaware Water Gap by Robert Hinshelwood in 1872 after Granville Perkins. Towards the foreground, people are shown on the shore and in some canoes on the calm river. The mountain range looms over them towards the background. This piece was illustrated by Granville Perkins and engraved by Robert Hinshelwood. The Delaware Water Gap is located on the border of New Jersey and Pennsylvania where the Delaware River cuts through the Appalachian Mountains. The Gap is made up of the southern part of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area that is now used for boating, fishing, hiking, and rock climbing. Granville Perkins, an American illustrator and painter, was best known for his landscapes and marine subjects. In the 1870s and 1880s, he contributed many of his works to journals and books. Other mediums he took part in were oils and watercolors. He would go on to exhibit his work at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the National Academy of Design. Robert Hinshelwood was born in Edinburgh and came to the United States circa 1835. He was an engraver who worked mostly with landscapes and was employed by the Harpers and other NYC publishers. He worked in Cincinnati circa 1855 and married the sister of landscape artist, James Simille. The date for the original print by Hinselwood was ascertained by a comparison with a similar manuscript digitized on the Library of Congress’ website.
