Description:

This is a photograph by Robert S. Knerr of a watercolor painting titled “Easton,” by Gustavus Johann Grunewald. The photograph depicts Easton, Pennsylvania featuring the Delaware River, a bridge crossing it, and many homes and structures in the distance. Easton is located in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Located at the confluence of the Lehigh River and Delaware River, it serves as a geographic boundary with Phillipsburg. The town was named on September 8, 1751 when a letter was written to Colonial Governor James Hamilton by William Penn, requesting for it to be called “Easton.” It was named after Lady Juliana’s family estate. The Lenape Native Americans originally referred to present-day Easton and its surrounding region as Lechauwitank, meaning "the Place at the Forks". According to Valley Views of Northeastern Pennsylvania by Gilbert S. McClintock, this is a “View of Easton from Phillipsburg, New Jersey. Collection: The Northampton County Historical & Genealogical Society.” This piece was created by Gustavus Johann Grunewald. Gustavus Johann Grunewald was born in Gnadau, Germany in 1805. He studied with Caspar David Friedrich at the Dresden Academy. Before immigrating to the United States, he worked in a porcelain factory. He moved to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and taught drawing and painting from 1836 to 1866 at the Moravian Seminary for Young Ladies. He later returned to Prussia and traveled throughout the Pocono Mountains and sketched from nature. He exhibited his work at the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Artists’ Fund Society, and many more. He died in 1878. The photographs appear to be copies of original prints that appeared in the History of Northampton County, Pennsylvania: with Illustrations Descriptive of its Scenery . From Original Sketches by Artists of the Highest Ability by William Denslow, published in 1877. This dates the range for Knerr’s reproductions after the publication of the book in 1877. A portion of the above manuscript by Denslow has been digitized on the WebArchives’ webpage. There, you can see the stylistic qualities in our manuscript within the collection.
