Title:
Lehigh River
Description:
“Lehigh River above the bridge.” An index card describing the photograph is included. This is from Kennedy & Company in New York City. This piece was created by Augustus Koellner.
The Lehigh River spans 109 miles across northeastern Pennsylvania and is a tributary of the Delaware River. Flowing from the Pocono Mountains it passes through Allentown and much of the Lehigh Valley, eventually joining with the Delaware River in Easton. The name of the river is derived from the anglicisation of the Lenape name, Lechewuekink, meaning “where there are forks.” Allentown was founded in 1762 and has Pennsylvania Dutch origins. Located in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, on the Lehigh River, it is the third-most-populous city in Pennsylvania. This area was first home to the Lenape Native American tribe until William Penn came to the area.
Bethlehem is located in the Northampton and Lehigh counties in eastern Pennsylvania. Settled along the 109-mile long Lehigh River tributary of the Delaware River, this city historically was inhabited by indigenous people that included the Algonquian speaking Lenape. They traded with Dutch and British colonists up the east coast. William Allen who was a wealthy Philadelphia merchant and politician deeded 500 acres along the Monocacy Creek and Lehigh River to the Moravian Church on April 2, 1741. The Moravians would have a grand settlement here and often held missions.
Augustus Koellner was a German painter and lithographer that was active from 1813-1906.
Mentioned in the description, Edmund Darch Lewis was an American landscape painter born on October 17, 1835 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was best known for his prolific style, marine oils, and watercolor paintings. He began his training when he was fifteen years old with Paul Weber, a German-born artist, at the Hudson River School. By age 19 he was exhibiting his work at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. By the age of 24, he was elected an Associate of the Academy.
