Description:

A photograph printed by Kennedy & Company of a wash drawing by Augustus Kroellner depicting the Lehigh River with a covered bridge going across it. This was produced by Kennedy & Co. in New York City and is annotated as “At Easton, Pa,” by Kroellner. The Lehigh River spans 109 miles across northeastern Pennsylvania and is a tributary of the Delaware River. Flowing from the Pocono Mountains it passes through Allentown and much of the Lehigh Valley, eventually joining with the Delaware River in Easton. The name of the river is derived from the anglicisation of the Lenape name, Lechewuekink, meaning “where there are forks.” Easton is located in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Located at the confluence of the Lehigh River and Delaware River, it serves as a geographic boundary with Phillipsburg. The town was named on September 8, 1751 when a letter was written to Colonial Governor James Hamilton by William Penn, requesting for it to be called “Easton.” It was named after Lady Juliana’s family estate. The Lenape Native Americans originally referred to present-day Easton and its surrounding region as Lechauwitank, meaning "the Place at the Forks". This piece was created by Augustus Koellner. Augustus Koellner was a German painter and lithographer that was active from 1813-1906. For more information on A. Koellner’s other collections, visit the Library Company of Philadelphia’s Website.
