Description:
This is a photograph of an oil painting depicting the town of Wyalusing. There is a settlement towards the middle of the piece and a mountain range in the background. This work was painted by Julius O. Montalant. According to Valley Views of Northeastern Pennsylvania by Gilbert S. McClintock, “View from the west side of the river. At the left is shown the old Welles Family homestead, still a landmark in the Wyalusing neighborhood.”
Wyalusing is located in Northeastern Pennsylvania in Bradford County. This borough dates back for centuries and was originally named M'chwihilusing. Prior to 1750, Wyalusing was known as Gahontoto, home to the Native American Tehotachsee tribe. The Moravian Christian Munsees, who were absolute pacifists, founded a settlement named Friedenshuetten (Tents or Cabins of Peace) in the spring of 1765, which is now part of present day. Wyalusing.
Julius O. Montalant was born in Virginia in 1823 and was best known for his exotic landscape paintings. These works were often inspired by his travels on navy ships. He has lived in Philadelphia, Rome, Italy, and Europe, returning to New York mid 1859. He exhibited at the Philadelphia Art Union and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1851-1861. He died in Rome, Italy in 1878.
