Title:

“View of Wyalusing”

Description:

This is a photograph of an oil painting depicting Wyalusing, Pennsylvania. According to Valley View of Northeastern Pennsylvania by Gilbert S. McClintock, “View from the west side of the river. At the left is shown the old Welles Family homestead, still a landmark in the Wyalusing neighborhood.” This piece was painted by Julius O. Montalant. Julius O. Montalant was born in Virginia in 1823 and was best known for his exotic landscape paintings. These works were often inspired by his travels on navy ships. He has lived in Philadelphia, Rome, Italy, and Europe, returning to New York mid 1859. He exhibited at the Philadelphia Art Union and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1851-1861. He died in Rome, Italy in 1878.
