Wyoming Valley

Description:

This is a photograph of an oil painting of the Susquehanna River. What appears to be some boats are sailing along the river. There are also people looking at the river or walking along the trail and a few houses sit on the river’s edge. This painting was created by Edmund Darch Lewis. According to Valley Views of Northeastern Pennsylvania by Gilbert S. McClintock, this is “A view from West Nanticoke. A painting by E. D. Lewis entitled, “The Gates of the Susquehanna” is in the Clifford Lewis Collection, Philadelphia.” Nanticoke is divided into Honey Pot and Hanover and was once a very active coal mining community. The name of this city is derived from the Native American Nentego or “tidewater people.” These people spoke Algonquin and were forced to move into this area after their Chesapeake Bay homelands were overtaken by European settlers. The Susquehanna River is a major river located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States and covers much of Pennsylvania. It stretches 444 miles long, making it the longest river on the East Coast, and the 16th largest river in the United States. The river is made up of two main branches including the North Branch and the West Branch. The river drains 27,500 square miles that includes much of Pennsylvania. The river empties into the northern part of the Chesapeake Bay. Edmund Darch Lewis was an American landscape painter born on October 17, 1835 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was best known for his prolific style, marine oils, and watercolor paintings. He began his training when he was fifteen years old with Paul Weber, a German-born artist, at the Hudson River School. By age 19 he was exhibiting his work at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. By the age of 24, he was elected an Associate of the Academy.
