Title:

Wyoming Valley

Description:

This is a photograph of an oil painting depicting the Wyoming Valley. According to Valley Views of Northeastern Pennsylvania, by Gilbert S. McClintock, “A view from Tilbury Knob near West Nanticoke.” Nanticoke is divided into Honey Pot and Hanover and was once a very active coal mining community. The name of this city is derived from the Native American Nentego or “tidewater people.” These people spoke Algonquin and were forced to move into this area after their Chesapeake Bay homelands were overtaken by European settlers. This piece was possibly painted by Mrs. Alexander E. Christie. (Pos.) Mrs. E. A. Christie was active during 1867-1869. She had exhibited her work at the Boston Athenaeum and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She was said to have lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. According to some newspaper clippings, E. A. Christie exhibited some of her work at the Osterhout in Gilbert S. McClintock’s Collection. Another work of her’s titled, “A Glimpse of Lake Erie,” is mentioned as well in an article about the Fine Arts - The Reception of the Artists’ Fund.
