Title:
Wyoming Valley
Description:
This is a set of two photographs of an oil painting of a view of the Susquehanna River from West Nanticoke. These prints are replicated in the same measurement and treatment. There are mountainous regions on either side of the river, indicating the Wyoming Valley. Nanticoke is divided into Honey Pot and Hanover and was once a very active coal mining community. The name of this city is derived from the Native American Nentego or “tidewater people.” These people spoke Algonquin and were forced to move into this area after their Chesapeake Bay homelands were overtaken by European settlers. The Susquehanna River is a major river located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States and covers much of Pennsylvania. It stretches 444 miles long, making it the longest river on the East Coast, and the 16th largest river in the United States. The river is made up of two main branches including the North Branch and the West Branch. The river drains 27,500 square miles that includes much of Pennsylvania. The river empties into the northern part of the Chesapeake Bay.
According to Valley Views of Northeastern Pennsylvania by Gilbert S. McClintock, this is “A view down the river from West Nanticoke.” This piece can be found in the Mrs. Ernest Smith Collection in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. It was also painted by Thomas Hill.
Thomas Hill was born on September 11, 1829 in Birmingham, England. He emigrated to the United States at the age of 15 and settled in Taunton, Massachusetts. He was an English-American artist during the 19th century who produced many landscape paintings. These works included Californian scenery like Yosemite and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. He died on June 30, 1908.
