Description:

A Philadelphia newspaper titled the Pennsylvania Packet or General Advertiser, printed by John Dunlap, from October 26, 1779. The newspaper includes five articles that have been highlighted by the previous owner, written in brown/faded black ink: the repealing of an act regulating the shipping of flour, the passing of an “Act for the more easy recovery of legacies,” a report on Major General Benjamin Lincoln and the ongoing battles taking place in the Southern Theater of the American Revolution, and two reports from Boston and Norwich regarding the movement of naval forces in the area. The newspaper includes other reports regarding the war, as well as a series of advertisements, including: a 100 dollar reward for a missing horse, a call for a maid, slaves, and frying pans. The majority of the newspaper focuses on updates regarding the Southern Theater.

Tuesday, October 26, 1779. Pennsylvania Bracket or the General Advertiser [Published every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.] Philadelphia. A Supplement to the Act, intitled: An Act “to prevent the exportation of Bread and Flour not “merchantable,’ and to the Act which is an amendment thereof. Whereas, often in the shipping of flour for exportation, a number of persons other than the owners of ships in which it was exported, have put each his own private adventure in one and the same vessel, and the officer appointed for the execution of the said acts, having charged the owners of such ships or vessels with the fees due to him for the try of the whole cargo of flour, has lost the greater part of his said fees, when after the departure of the vessel it remained unknown who were the right owners of the flour laden therein.
