Title:
The Scranton Republican
Description:
A newspaper from Scranton, Pennsylvania dating back to July 4th, 1878. The newspaper makes multiple references of historical significance, including: Mentions of Constantinople (which is now Istanbul), the Solar Eclipse of 1878, an article about the Potter Committee (a massive government inquiry into the election of 1876, which found evidence of fraud and corruption by both Republican and Democrat parties), a mention of a potential revolution stirring in Panama (which would not occur until the separation of Panama from Columbia in 1903), an article regarding the Berlin Congress (a diplomatic meeting in Germany to reorganize the Balkan states after the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 as the Ottoman Empire began to collapse), a lengthy article including poems and tributes about the centennial celebration of the Battle of Wyoming (a 1778 massacre during the American Revolution, where American forces were routed and killed at the hands of British Loyalist soldiers and Iroquois Native Americans) and a mention of Col. Henry Hoyt’s governor campaign. The majority of the paper is a play-by-play of the events of the Battle of Wyoming.
