Title:

Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper

Description:

No. 1495, Vol. LVIII. Includes: Illustrations of forest fires near Ashland, an article regarding women practicing law, an article and illustration of the sinking of a steamship named State of Florida, and a racist cartoon likely depicting a racoon hunt as an allegory for attacking Black Americans and mocking them. By 1884 when this paper was published, Frank Leslie had already passed away, and the paper was run by his widow, Miriam Leslie. Miriam changed her name to Frank Leslie to keep the branding of the paper the same. The paper shifted to promote a more patriotic stance to American issues, which is very present in this issue of the newspaper.
