Description:

The following item is a double sided drawing made by artist Peter Newell. Newell was an artist and writer who frequently contributed his works to magazines like Harper's Weekly and Harper’s Bazaar. The first sketch is of an African American woman sweeping the floor as she stands in front of a telephone. The language used in the caption is extremely broken and stereotypical, mimicking that of a minstrel comic/show/depiction of African Americans. The second sketch is of a man hanging up or just simply looking at a painting, stating that he is making himself at home.
