Subseries I: Historical, 1948-1983, is arranged chronologically and contains essays, art and book catalogs, letters, financial reports, and general documents relating to academia or art. Many of the essays and booklets come from archivists and librarians like Felix Reichmann and Wyman W. Parker. A significant portion of the materials come from Princeton University. The financial reports and catalogs are also from Princeton University. Some of the materials may not come directly from the university, but mention it or are associated with it. There are documents relating to Princeton University as a whole, documents on the acquisition of artifacts, and booklets from the Princeton Art Museum.
