Description:
A series of letters between Nada Vujica and Donald S. Bridgman discussing the transfer of historical artifacts. The first letter is handwritten and four pages long and is from Donald S. Bridgman to Nada Vujica on November 27, 1969. This letter discusses photographs of older houses in Wilkes Barre and from historical figures in the area that he and his wife wish to donate to the Wilkes College library’s collection. There are then two lists of photographs and the letters say the photographs will be sent in packages. The next letter is one page handwritten from Bridgman to Vujica on January 15, 1970 asking if she has received the letter and photographs he had sent. The third letter is one page typed and is from Nada Vujica to Bridgman on January 19, 1970. Vujica says that she is giving them to the reference librarian to distribute to different places in the library where they are best suited. Nada Vujica was a Croatian poet and essayist who became a librarian at Wilkes College.

The Librarian, Wilkes College, Wilkes-Barre, Penna. Dear Mrs. Vujica, My wife who is not well has asked me to send you the enclosed photographs of her earlier house in Wilkes-Barre, built by her great uncle Thomas Ferrier Atherton in the middle of the second half of the 19th century, who was president of the Second National Bank in the 1860’s. The house in addition was of special interest because its principal round walls and ceiling contained many fresco paintings by Mlle Gambarreau, who came to this country as governess for the Thurlow family and later lived with Mrs. J.J. Atherton in this house. We understand the Thurlow house afterward was owned by the Fred Kirby’s and then was given to your college. A list of these photographs is enclosed on each of which further information usually on the back has been written by my wife or her sister Mrs Updegraff. A second list enclosed is of other photographs, some of my

wife’s [?], two of herself, and others of incidental interest. These are in a separate mailing folder. There is inclosed also my wife’s check for 25oo to cover the cost of these cellophane covers and a suitable folder for any of the photographs of sufficient interest to become part of the library’s collection of local historical material. If the cost should be greater she would be glad to send the additional amount required. If any or all of this material is no value to the library, we wish you to return it to us but since we don’t expect to b e at house for some time, please place any such where it will be safe and advise us that you are doing so for instructional to send it when we return. Of barely possible interest is a framed portrait of Thomas Ferrier Atherton (frame 31” x 36”-) portrait (24 ½ “ x 30”) with a plate giving his name and 1863- President 1870 Second National Bank done by U.S. Carpenter in 1904, presumably from a photograph. After our return, this could be sent you if you should care to have it. Sincerely Yours, Donald S. Bridgman.

The Librarian, Wilkes College Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Dear Madam; On December 1st, 1969, we sent you by certified mail two envelopes containing photographs of my wife’s (Sarah Atherton Bridgman) childhood home at 36 West River St, Wilkes-Barre, particularly of the murals on its interior walls and ceilings by Mlle Gambarreau. Thus for we have not heard of the safe arrival of this material and are anxious to know that it reached you. We felt that it illustrated a characteristic, if unusual, aspect of the city’s society in the late 1880’s and might be of genuine interest as a part of the college’s collection. Our transmitting letter asked that it be returned if that was not the rest but in that went would want you to hold it vast if our reference to

Dear Mr. Bridgman:
We did receive your two registered packages with pictures and I have given them to our reference librarian to classify and distribute them to the reference collection, treasure room, or wherever they will serve the best purpose. I find these pictures very interesting for a historical view of our city’s social life, valuable portraits, etc.
Also, thank you very much for the check in the amount of $25.00.
My apologies for not acknowledging it earlier - somewhere the draft of my answer got lost in the big rush of many book orders that we have been sending out recently.
Sincerely yours,
(Mrs.) Nada Vujica Librarian NV:lz
