He speaks about the health of their family, sending his condolences that her mother and a friend, Mrs. Tuttle, are ill. He shares that he has not heard anything from their friends in Virginia, but recently has had a letter from his brother suggesting they were all well. In the conclusion of his letter, he is thankful to hear that their other cousin, Mariam, has left a spouse he finds unworthy and wishes her happiness moving forward.
