Description:

The following item depicts a receipt dated December 11, 1825. The receipt is an account of goods purchased by Sarah H. Cist of Dennis Barnum, including a 25 gallon barrel of whiskey at 28 cents per gallon, and a new barrel of the same. There is a second charge on the account of $10.80, unspecified, and an additional 3 ½ gallons at the same charge per gallon. The account comes to a total of $19.62. The bottom of the account notes that the barrel can be returned to the owner if it remains in good condition with the bung in tact. A bung is a seal or cork used to close the barrel. Christopher Densmore, with Wisconsin University, has an article looking at the history of nineteenth century accounts entitled, “Understanding and Using Early Nineteenth Century Account Books.”
