Letter to Andrew McClintock from James McClintock
Description:
The following item depicts a letter by James McClintock to Andrew McClintock, dated November 26, 1828. In the letter, James writes to Andrew discussing possible employment opportunities for Andrew. James also issues advice for Andrew regarding the importance of meeting a person high up in the court system. He writes that two men have recently set up shops in the city, James D. Haff most recently. James writes that Haff has agreed to hire Andrew, along with his business partner, Judge Scott, for a fee of $150.00 plus board. James writes that Andrew should have the opportunity to meet with the men to demonstrate his character before long, and that Mrs. Haff would be pleased to set his room up accordingly.

WilkesBarre Nov[ember]. 26. 1828 My dear Andrew,
Your mother requested me to ascertain if any place could be procured for you in this Country, more profitable than the one you have. I have accordingly made every enquiry in my power + I think I have found one that will suit you in every aspect. Judge Scott and his brother-in-law James D. Haff of this place have already established one store + intend to open an other (sic) [another] in the course of a few days. They want a chief clerk of good character + qualifications in one of their establishments and will pay him a reasonable compensation. Mr Haff desired to know what salary you would expect, observing that they could not give more than 150$ and board. From my recollection of the am[oun]t you are now receiving, I told him it was highly probable you would agree to accept that sum. If you can come, you may depend upon enjoying as much comfort with Mr. Haff as with any person with whom you could be placed ; he is a man of unexceptionable character, and has a wife who would spare no pains, I think, to make your condition, in every respect apuable. Judge Scott will be in Northumberland next monday or tuesday, at which time you can see him, and refer him for your character + qualifications &c [etcetera] to Mr. Shannon or Mr. Cowder with whom he is acquainted. Write to me by return of mail on the subject. My love to your mother. I will write to her in a few days. Truly yours J[ames] M[c]Clintock
