Description:
The following item depicts a letter dated October 18, 1856, written by Samuel Jones Tilden, a former Governor of New York, to Andrew Todd McClintock. In the letter, Tilden is writing to McClintock concerning an account between the two men that requires finishing payment. Tilden writes that he received McClintock’s letters in his office, after being on business that kept him away for longer than the expected three days. He continues on to say that he has not had time to look at McClintock's reports, but believes his writing to be correct. He asks that he pay the remainder of their account and write to Tilden if there is a tax due on another deed from the 15th.

I reached my
office this morning after
an absence which had been protracted from its
expected duration of three
days to a week : and found
your two letters. As the
protest per non payment took
place yesterday, I was in
reason to pay your draft
this morning - which
I did. You will doubtless,

be advised of due payment by mail. I have not yet had time to examine your account of the matter : but presume it is correct. You will please satisfy the mort[gage]. & send me the proper evidences that I may refund them to the purchases.
Inside Page Right:
Please write me also that there are no taxes due [paid] to 15 Sept[ember]1856 which are not paid - if such be the fact. In haste truly Yrs [Yours] S. T. Tilden
