Description:
The following item is a letter written by Jay Gould to Andrew Todd McClintock, dated November 29, 1856. In the letter, Gould writes that he has received a letter from McClintock that he believes will aid in getting a contract recorded. He writes definitely, however, that it will aid in preserving the reference of the contract at hand.
Jay Gould was a railroad magnate who was also a well known speculator during the Gilded Age, a period spanning the late 1870s to the late 1980s, and founded the Gould business dynasty. He is also the namesake and founder of the town he writes from, Gouldsboro. He rose to a class of wealth known as the Robber Barons, which were an elite social class status who utilized an unfettered consumption of natural resources in order to increase their own financial success. For the railroad industry, this was seen during the expansion of the Transcontinental Railroad, which stipulated that whoever laid the track was granted the rights to soil on said land.
It is not clear what this is about but it seems to regard a past request.
