The following item depicts a letter dated July 8, 1878, written by Charles Devens to Andrew Todd McClintock. In the letter, Devens writes that the presidential party arrived back in Washington the previous night from their visit to the Wyoming Valley. He writes that they were tired but were greatly pleased by the good experience and hospitality that met them on their journey. Devens goes on to ask Andrew to write to his wife, Hannah McClintock, and send his thanks and respects to him. The presidential party in question would have been that of president Rutherford B. Hayes’ term during the Third Party System. This is a letter written from the United States’ Attorney General Charles Devens who served as the 35th AG from 1877-1881. The letter is written on paper with a heading that reads in printed text, “Department of Justice, Washington.” The envelope the letter came in is included with the letter, and has “Department of Justice” printed on the top left of the envelope where the sender’s address is. The envelope is stamped, “Washington D.C., Jul 8, 4PM, 1878” The envelope is addressed to A. J. McClintock, Esq, Wilkes-Barre PA- and the return address only has “Judge Devens, Atty General.” written.
