Title:
Cocktails for Quart Bottle
Description:
The following item depicts a handwritten recipe for a mixed drinked. The recipe is written on the legal ledger paper of Andrew H. McClintock, plausibly inferring that he is the author.
The recipe may be possible for a Manhattan or early negroni drink, as it includes vermouth and bitters. Though many modern day negroni recipes include gin rather than whiskey, this may be an earlier form of the drink.
The recipe uses the measurement of “dram,” which was a “A fluid dram equals one-eighth of a fluid ounce (the equivalent to two average-size thimbles), so there would be 128 drams per pint and 1,024 drams per gallon. So, there are 32 drams in a gill” (National Park Service).
The date of the manuscript has been estimated between the late nineteenth century and early twentieth according to McClintock’s dates.
