Description:

The following item depicts a printed letter by Mary A. Benjamin to Gilbert Stuart McClintock, dated June 26, 1958. In the letter, Benjamin is responding to an exchange request of Gilbert McClintock’s. In a previous letter, McClintock’s secretary as sent over a variety of checks and manuscripts by various authors or creators that McClintock hopes to exchange for three pieces: A Letter by Calvin Coolidge to Mr. J. P. E, 1921 December 19, priced at $50.00; A Letter by William McKinley to Mr. C. E. Supp (sic), [Charles Earl Sapp], 1896 April 19, priced at $40.00; and A Letter by Andrew Jackson to Colonel Robert Hays, 1808 February 5, priced at $40.00. All of the items sent by McClintock are not named, only the pieces of interest by Benjamin are, which she offers a credit to the purchase of one of the three above named letters in exchange. Benjamin states that she is interested in a check by William Henry Harrison, dated 1838 May 29, for a worth of $20.00. In addition to this item, Benjamin states an interest in an item by John Quincy Adams, dated 1804 January 20. This item has a proposed worth of $25.00 to Benjamin. Together, if given these items, Benjamin would give McClintock $45.00 credit to any of the above mentioned items. It is important to note that the name has been mistranscribed in Benjamin’s sale, transcribed as C. E. Supp, rather than C. E. Sapp, for Charles Earl Sapp. The Notable Men of Kentucky, by Ben La Bree, offers a naming of Charles Earl Sapp under Federal Officers. The location has been assigned by comparison with other manuscripts in the collection that display Benjamin’s address by Gilbert McClintock.
