Description:
The following item depicts a photostat of a letter by William McKinley, the 25th president of the United States, to Mr. C. E. Supp (sic) [Charles Earl Sapp], dated April 19, 1896. In the letter McKinley writes that he has received a previous letter by Supp on the 17th. McKinley states that his warm sentiments are appreciated and greatly returned. He invites Supp to Ohio, eager to host him at his convenience. He writes that Mr. Mark Hanna would be glad to see Supp. He concludes by requesting Supp to write him of his plans soon.
The letter is a photostat created by Mary A. Benjamin. She is offering the copy in order to broker a trade with Gilbert Stuart McClintock for items that pertain to influential and presidential candidates of the Wilkes Barre, Northeastern Pennsylvanian region, of which McClintock expressed interest within Benjamin’s collection.
It is important to note that the name has been mistranscribed in Benjamin’s sale, transcribed as C. E. Supp, rather than C. E. Sapp, for Charles Earl Sapp.
The Notable Men of Kentucky, by Ben La Bree, offers a naming of Charles Earl Sapp under Federal Officers.
The date of the photostat by Mary Benjamin, found in the dates tag, has been estimated to occur with her letter naming the same to Gilbert Stuart McClintock, item 1.43d.
The Nashville American newspaper has a mention of Sapp and other Kentucky politics during the voting of William McKinley.
