Description:
The following item depicts a photostat of a letter by James Buchanan to Hendrick Bradley Wright, dated May 22, 1841. In the letter, Buchanan is writing about concerns following the passing of the Relief Bill. He writes that he was shocked to find that Wright supported the passing of the bill, stating that he himself saw many reasons that it went against, what Buchanan writes, is “hostile to the principles of Democracy.” Buchanan further critiques Wright’s previous letter, suggesting that Wright writes that he believes Buchanan will come to see the rightness in passing the bill. He states that he expects to be mocked for his position in vetoing the bill, but now that it is passed, there is nothing to be done than to see the outcomes. He concludes his letter, however, suggesting that he does not want these tensions to overcome their friendship.
The Relief Bill, or H. R. 17, passed the 26th Congress during 1839-1841, was a bill proposed and passed to aid those indebted to the United States.
The letter is a photostat created by Gilbert Stuart McClintock. He is offering the copy in order to broker a trade with Mary A. Benjamin for items that pertain to influential and presidential candidates of the Wilkes Barre, Northeastern Pennsylvanian region, of which McClintock expressed interest of within her collection.
The date of the photostat by Gilbert Stuart McClintock, found in the dates tag, has been estimated to occur with his letter naming the same to Mary A. Benjamin, item1.43b.
