Description:

The following item depicts a photostat of a letter byJohn Quincy Adams to W. Smith, dated January 20, 1804. In the letter, Adams writes concerning a bill recently brought before the House of Representatives, which proposed an intention of protecting seamen. However, Adams writes that the bill only appears to work in favour of protecting British seamen from their government’s purview “within its own jurisdiction,” by Adams’ words. Adams continues to suggest further that the bill would never pass in foreign courts for the overreach present in the principle of the bill’s proposal, especially not in any of Great Britains. He concludes his letter by suggesting that it is up to the individual to weigh the measured consequences and measures afforded to them on property they have on waters, rather than a governing body outside of their home country to do so. The letter is a photostat created by Gilbert Stuart McClintock. He is offering the copy in order to broker a trade with Mary A. Benjamin for items that pertain to influential and presidential candidates of the Wilkes Barre, Northeastern Pennsylvanian region, of which McClintock expressed interest of within her collection. The date of the photostat by Gilbert Stuart McClintock, found in the dates tag, has been estimated to occur with his letter naming the same to Mary A. Benjamin, item 1.43b.
