Description:
The following item depicts printed blueprints by F. C. Withers, of Vaux & Withers architecture, for renovations to the two story home belonging to Andrew Todd McClintock. The house is the structure on 44 South River Street, and was created in 1863. The house was built in 1841, with renovations in 1863 made to the interior. The designs show two floors, the principal, first, and the chamber, second, with a scale of 16 feet to an inch. The chamber floor includes about eight bedrooms, with a landing off the stairs, a hall in the back portion of the house, and one bathroom. There is an arcade at the front.
The principal floor includes a library, two parlors off the right of the entry hallway, and a kitchen and dining room with adjoining pantry at the back.
A second page of the plans depicts the exterior, side profile of the structure.
Andrew Todd McClintock was born in 1810, in Northumberland county to Hannah Todd McClintock and Samuel McClintock. He studied at Kenyon College in Ohio, later being admitted to the bar in Luzerne County in 1839, where he built a prominent professional career in the valley during his life. He also pursued many professional connections, rising to a director role for the Wyoming National Bank and a presidential seat on the Hollenback Cemetery Association. Princeton college conferred a degree of LL. D. in 1870 to McClintock. At the time of his death in 1892, McClintock was one of the oldest members in the Luzerne Bar, where he continued to maintain the interests of many corporate entities until the time of his passing.
Frederick C. Withers was an English architect, born in 1828 in Shepton Mallet. He was particularly renowned for his Gothic Revival touches, and built a professional career with his partner, Calvert Vaux. Withers was a particular influence in the introduction of the High Victorian Gothic style in the United States.
