Description:

The image depicts nine men in suits arranged together in standing and seated positions. The backdrop of the photograph boasts a dense wooded area. The men each carry a hat with them which they have removed. On the reverse of the photograph, there are annotated names: Hillard Bell, Oliver Hillard, Levi Shoemaker, Harry Hillard, George Lynch, “T.,” Tuthill Hillard, S. Ayars, John Butler “But” Woodward, and Bill Darling. There is also an annotation that proposes the year taken to be either 1883 or 1884. It is plausible that the photograph is a Yale graduation photograph, as a number of the men graduated from Yale in 1883, including John Butler Woodward, Levi Shoemaker, and Tuthill Hillard.
