Description:
The following item depicts an albumen print photograph depicting Andrew Hamilton McClintock, with his father, Andrew Todd McClintock, holding two young children. The children are most likely those of Andrew Hamilton McClintock, Andrew Todd McClintock and Gilbert Stuart McClintock. The reverse of the manuscript has an annotation that appears with Augusta McClintock’s name, the wife of Andrew Todd and mother of Andrew Hamilton.
An albumen print photograph was a photographic method that utilized egg whites, the albumen, to create a smooth surface to produce a shine to the page. The page was first coated with the albumen, layered with a silver nitrate solution in order to produce light-sensitive silver salts. Lastly, the glass negative would be placed on the page and exposed to light, revealing the image captured.
The date for the image has been estimated by the ages of the two children, Andrew and Gilbert, who were born 1885-1886. Their young ages would put them no later than the early 1890s.
