Description:

The following item depicts a black-and-white photograph of fourteen men, Andrew Hamilton McClintock and associate club members, sitting on the steps of a grand entryway. The men are attired in three-piece suits, many of them holding a top hat they have likely removed for the photograph. The men are believed to be members of the Westmoreland Club from a similar photograph, members list, and dates in a photograph of the club’s history included on the Westmoreland Club’s website. The Westmoreland Club is a private club celebrating leading members of the arts, business, education, government, and industry, within the valley. Established in 1873, the club has grown to an impressive preservation and celebration of the rich history that shaped the valley, including much of the Connecticut roots and experience in the valley. The men include Andrew Hamilton McClintock, beginning on the left, followed by John B. Reynolds, George Reynolds Bedford, Joseph David Coons, Theodore Frelinghuysen Ryman, Benjamin Reynolds, John M. Crane, E. C. Franck, Henry A. Fuller, Charles D. Foster, Charles E. Rice, Albert Lewis, Abram Hoyt, and H. Harrison Harvey. They are standing before a dark clapboard home with shuttered windows. There is ivy growing along the posts and railings of the porch behind them. There is an accompanying inscription, numbering the men 1-14, under which they inscribe their names below. Andrew Hamilton McClintock was born on December 12, 1852 to Andrew Todd McClintock and Augusta Bordley Cist McClintock. He played a hand in many provincial roles in the valley, such as a director position of the Miner’s Saving Bank of Wilkes-Barre, as well as a librarian and treasurer dual role at the Osterhout Free Library. After graduating from the College of New Jersey, Princeton, Hamilton began studying law under his father and J. V. Darling. In 1876, Hamilton was admitted to the Luzerne Bar. The Westmoreland Club House website has a similar photograph of the members at a meeting at Bear Lake, 1900, which contains many of the figures' names. However, their image is excluding some of those in our item, including McClintock and E. C. Franck
