Description:
The following item depicts two photographs of the McClintock family’s dining room being staged for the Centennial Celebration of 1926, conducted by the historical society. The Centennial Celebration of 1926 indicated by McClintock most likely refers to the region’s celebration for the American Revolutionary War’s two hundred year anniversary. However, there was also a nationwide celebration for the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of American Independence, Sesquicentennial of American Independence and the Thomas Jefferson Centennial Commission of the United States. June 18, 1926. The Library of Congress has a digitized edition of an Official Plan for the latter.
There is an annotation and note by Gilbert Stuart McClintock, which explains the reasoning of the staging but focuses more on the five-piece dining set present at the center of the room. His note mentions that the set once belonged to his grandfather’s mother-in-law, Andrew Todd McClintock and Sarah Anne Hollenback Cist Butler. It was sold as a set with the sale of their house in 1951.
The dates for Bruce Payne could not be found at present, however, we have ascertained that he was the president of the Payne Coal Company, established in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. His wife, Marion Hillard Payne is addressed by McClintock, along with Charles Miner’s wife, Letitia Wright Miner.
