Description:
A photograph by an unknown artist depicting thirteen men who were part of the Cheese and Crackers Club, one of the first social organizations of the Wyoming Valley that was formed in the 1860s. It predated the current Westmoreland Club that is currently located in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. The men pictured in the photograph (from left to right) are John H. Swoyer, J.G. Phelps, Winthrop Welles Ketcham, Andrew Todd McClintock, William Lord Conyngham, Judge G.M. Harding, Henry Martyn Hoyt Jr., D.E.R. Mager, E.P. Darling, Judge Stanley Woodward, Washington Lee, J.T. He held a career as an American lawyer and politician in the valley and served as the 18th governor of Pennsylvania for the term of 1879-1883. His law career, while successful enough to rise swiftly to the office of chief, was short when he gained influence in the Republican party. He later became the chair of the Republican party from 1875-1876. He also served in the Civil War as an officer for the Union army.
Charles Parrish was born August 27, 1826 in Dundaff, Susquehanna County to Archippus and Phebe (Miller) Parrish. When his father became the proprietor of a hotel shortly after Parrish’s birth, the family relocated to Wilkes-Barre. In his youth, parrish attended the Wilkes-Barre Academy before becoming a clerk for the store of Ziba Bennett of Wilkes-Barre. Though her rose to become a partner in the firm, he left the office in 1875 when he began speculation in the coal trade. He would go on to found the Kembleton Coal Company and become the director of the Jersey Central Railroad. Parrish’s longest career was as the president of the First National Bank of Wilkes-Barre, an office he held for 20 years.
Andrew Todd McClintock was born in Northumberland, Pennsylvania on February 2, 1810. He was an alumni of Kenyon College, Ohio and studied law. He was a Director of the Wyoming National Bank and President of Hollenback Cemetery Association, Director of Wilkes-Barre Hospital, President of the Wilkes-Barre Law and Library Association, member of the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society, Elder in the Presbyterian Church. McClintock died January 1, 1892.
