Title:
Le Retable D’Isenheim au Musée de Colmar Reproductions en Couleurs
Description:
A French booklet containing six leafs of reproductions of Matthias Grünewald’s artwork from The Isenheim Altarpiece. The altarpiece was created between 1512-1516 and is essentially a large, mobile box surrounded by statues covered by folded wings. It was made to serve as a central object of devotion at an Isenheim hospital. There are six pieces of art layed out separately in the booklet with accompanying descriptions in French titled:
La Crucifixion et la Mise au tombeau
L’Annonciation et la Résurrection
La Nativité et la Concert d’anges
La Légende de saint Antoine
Saint Antoine et saint Sébastien
Les Sculptures
Matthias Grünewald was a German Renaissance painter born around 1470. His works were of religious theme that ignored Renaissance classicism that continued the style of late medieval Central European art. Only ten paintings—including several polyptychs—and thirty-five drawings survive, all religious, although many others were lost at sea on their way to Sweden as war booty. He was obscure until the late nineteenth century, when many of his paintings were attributed to Albrecht Dürer, who is now seen as his stylistic antithesis. His largest and most famous work is the Isenheim Altarpiece created c. 1512 to 1516. He died August 31, 1528.
Louis Réau was a French art historian born on January 1, 1881 in Poitiers. His work involved the international influence of French artwork and his magnum opus, Iconographie de l'Art Chrétien, contained six volumes. He had studied at École Normale Supérieure in Paris and at École Nationale des Langues Orientales Vivantes. He later became the Director of the Institut français de Saint-Pétersbourg. He died in Paris on June 10, 1961.
The publication date for the original book published by Louis Reau, 1920, was ascertained by comparison to a listing of the same title on Livre Rare Books.
