Description:

This is a letter from Rebecca Karo to Judith O’Toole, the Sordoni Art Gallery Director at Wilkes College, on December 17, 1982. In this typed letter, Karo is giving background history on Sylvester Rosa Kohler, the first curator for the Department of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs with the museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Karo also writes their regards, and send along some pages that Walter Muir Whitehill wrote regarding the career of Mr. Kohler. There is an archivist annotation from the Farley Library staff at the time, indicating the attached papers to another staff member, Hsi-ping Shao. Hsi-ping Shao holds a PhD in history fro the University of Pennsylvania and worked as a library sciences educator at Wilkes University from 1970s-1980s. She wrote an article on the ambivalent relationships between China and Japan titled, “From 21 Demands to the Sino-Japanese Military Agreements, 1915-1918.” She was married to Kao-kang Shao, a fellow doctorate and educator of Wilkes University.

Sylvester Rosa Koehler was a prominent curator and etchist during his life. Koehler immigrated to the states with his family from Germany after receiving the classic education, being trained as a composer of note. He later became an editor for the American Art Review, beginning his earlier eye for etchings while commissioning the for the publication. He became one of the first curators of prints at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In another Wilkes University collection, the Art and Prints collection of the Stuart Gilbert McClintock collection, the library has a print by Sylvester Rosa Koehler: 21.113a-e. Item 113a-e.
