Title:

Recreational Reading in a Large University Library System

Description:

A short eight page essay on the topic of recreational reading by Felix Reichmann who is the assistant director of Cornell University Library. The essay is reprinted from School and Society Vol. 68 No. 1762 on October 2, 1948. It looks at the argument of what “recreational reading is” and what its place should be in the greater picture of literature and engaging with it. The essay cites other authors and works on the topic. The general discussion Reichmann is having is that the conditions the library creates for recreational reading is important to students’ enjoyment of reading. He gives advice to librarians as to what their goal should be in guiding students towards wanting to read and enjoying it and specific advice for book suggestions. He also argues that recreational reading is vital for students.
