Record of the Art Museum Princeton University Volume XV 1956 Number 1

Description:

The item is a copy of The Record published by Princeton University’s Art Museum. It is a booklet describing the exhibits on display at the Princeton University art museum in 1956. The booklet is 27 pages long and includes two articles, photos of the art discussed within the articles, and a list of recent acquisitions. There is a large article written about the sketchbook of Thomas Cole talking about the art within it and information about the artist himself. This part is written by Louis Hawes and includes an editorial note stating that graduate students in the Department of Art and Archaeology work on original materials in the museum and their studies are published in The Record. There is a second smaller article about three Mycenaean figurines within the museum’s collection as well. The article talks about each figurine in detail focusing on the materials and intentions of their creation. This article is written by an F.F.J., possibly Francis Follin Jones who is the Assistant to the Director at the museum. Pages 11-18 include images of both the sketches from Cole’s sketchbook and of the Mycenaean figurines. The last two pages (26-27) include a list of objects acquired by the museum in 1955. The objects are broken down into categories: paintings, sculpture, metalwork, prints, drawings, and miscellaneous. The back page of the booklet includes information about the museum, the booklet which is called The Record, staff information, and the organization, The Friends of the Museum, which people can become members of.
